🛡️ Respect for a Soldier’s Promise | A Powerful Islamic Story
Introduction
Islam teaches honesty, trust, and respect for promises. One of the strongest values in Islam is keeping one’s word, even in difficult times.
This true historical story from the era of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA) shows how Islam respects a promise made by even a simple soldier.
Description
The period of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA) saw the caliphate, the Muslims and the Persians engaged in wars all the time, and one of these battles took place in Iraq at a place named Nimariq in the year 12 Hijri.
The Persians were supported by Jaban, who was endowed with all those qualities that made him one of the best and most intelligent rulers of those days. The Muslim army was led by Abu Ubaid Thaqafi (RA), a close friend of the Prophet ﷺ who had always been a believer since the very beginning.
The Muslims were almost three to four times fewer in number than the Persians, but their trust in Allah was their strength. After the brutal fight, the Muslims won over the Persians. A large number of the Persian army were either slain or fled, and some were taken captive.
One of the captives was Jaban, but the soldier who took him as a prisoner was unaware of his identity. Jaban outsmarted the soldier and stated that he was an old man and offered money for his release. The Muslim soldier trusted him and gave him protection (aman).
Later, when Jaban’s identity got revealed,d and he was brought to the Muslim camp, people remembered him and demanded for him the death sentence. However, Hazrat Abu Ubaid (RA) took a remarkable step. He said:
“Islam does not allow any breach of promise. A Muslim has given him protection. So, we are not allowed to shed his blood.”
Thus, Jaban was set free. He was moved to a secure location where he would be out of danger.
